SF50 - A Big Day Out
Published on November 8, 2025.
Fifty beautiful miles through the city of San Francisco
With vibrant neighborhoods, iconic landmarks and stunning greenery, San Francisco is the perfect backdrop for an urban adventure. So, if you can cover 50 miles (80 km) on foot in one day, then this is your ultimate big day out in the city.
Why? There is simply no better way to explore San Francisco than by running through it. You’re agile enough to reach secluded spots, fast enough to see a lot, yet slow enough to notice the city’s details and enjoy the interactions along the way. That is why I first created and ran a similar 70 km loop across the city back in 2023. It’s one of my favorite memories of the city, which is why I decided to refine the route, extend it into a 50-mile loop, and share it with you.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind for your big day out. While there are plenty of options for food and water along the route, you’ll sometimes need to look carefully to find public water fountains. For example, there’s one inside Equator Coffee at the southern base of the Golden Gate Bridge, and another in the public restroom building in the middle of the parking lot on the northern side of the bridge.
Start early to maximize daylight and avoid running through the forested Presidio after dark. Bring a headlamp, just in case. Lastly, don’t underestimate the many hills. They’re fun and offer great views, but they’ll also slow you down.
